bad assumption leads to strategically premature resignation

Postby Mammalman » Sat Aug 21, 2010 5:35 pm

i picked up teach row and grow quad on one side, teach row and bankrupt row on another. i was able to teach the grow quad first and then bankrupt row and a second grow quad to a row of about 8 pieces. ONE of them happened to have move again before the teach, and when i activated move again on it my opponent instantly resigned, before i'd even activated a single grow quad. had i taught a whole row of move agains the instant resignation would be more or less reasonable, but in fact i had no aggressive powers, as he would have learned had he stuck around. then all it would take is one recruit or swap column and he's likely to bankrupt my half forcing all my doublegrown quadders to stop moving...point is it was not in fact nearly so bad, but he incorrectly assumed everyone had move again (at least, that's what i'm assuming...)
i believe someone suggested doing this is as a bluff way back, it's a great strat, but some people will fall for it even when you're not trying (as in this case)...make people reveal the powers they're going to use to kill you before you resign!

Honorable resignation is mostly a lie. This isn't chess where perfect play in a doomed situation practically guarantees victory- this is a game where Smart Bombs can show up out of nowhere and can flip the tables. And I like smart bombs for that exact reason, the fact that keeps the game always on that .01% edge of possibly getting turned upside-down at all times. It's exciting.

Seriously, just don't do hit the red button until every last torus is tripped and inhibited with no useful powers. Had I walked away from this after a catastrophic, undefendable Swap Row, that would've been a costly mistake. Granted, my opponent misplayed the situation a bit, but I turned it around from terrible odds against a 20+ squadron.

(Did I mention I'm hosting a QR guest tourney off-site?) :)

Just make a game show out of it.

From the Quadradius Arena... it's time for another game of:

How Many Smart Bombs Does It Take To Blow Up A Torus?

*laughter, applause*

I'd tune into that. Clearly most wouldn't.

my record is surviving 6 smartbombs... fittingly the three pieces that survived eventually was able to navigate to the middle and teach radial smarties for spite

recently someone used 8 on me in a guest game. the first 6 weren't bad but last two kill all hope

I'm not sure this was premature. Sure he should have stayed, but if a taught piece actives a power, than you can safely assume all of the other taught pieces have that same power (provided that he didn't initially have a power).

But it did initially have the Move Again. That's the issue.

I know I've already suggested this to a frustrated player somewhere in the forum, but let's repeat: "Never give up! Never surrender!".

still, you almost certainly gonna win. you had a massive arsenal.

if we're talking bad resignations, i've had people resign against me as soon as i activated grow quad + smart bombs
