QR in the IGF

Postby psychocide » Tue Oct 09, 2007 11:12 am

Just wanted to give you guys a head's up that Jimmi has submitted Quadradius to the 2008 Independent Game Festival, and the official list of entrants for the main competition is now up.

Quadradius in the IGF

This is a big deal for QR. The IGF is growing every year, and it attracts a lot of attention from the gaming press and players at large. If QR becomes a finalist (in the web-based game category, I believe), expect to see Jimmi interviewed on Gamasutra and a major influx of new players. If QR wins, expect... more awesome stuff.

So yeah, I'll be following the IGF like I always do, and I'll post updates if people are interested. December 3rd is the date they announce the finalists.

Viva Quadradius!

If this isn't until February, would QR be judged on present construction or Qrimson and Qlover?

That's a good question. I was curious about how they handled continuously updated games, so I looked it up:

Updates: Entered Game updates are permitted during the Nominating Period. Patched updates from competitors via FTP or CD-ROM will be permitted throughout the judging process. However, Sponsor does not guarantee the viewing or application of every patch/update by the Nominating Committee.

So Jimmi can continue to add updates, new powers, new server stuff, etc. throughout the judging process, but there's no guarantee the new stuff will be considered.

The finalist announcement is December 3rd, so at least the first round of judging will have taken place by then. Perhaps if QRimson and Qlover are finished before that or before the finalist judging period (assuming QR became a finalist), the new stuff would be considered, but I'm not sure it'll be done by then. I'm guessing QR will be judged as it is now, at least this time around.

Given that Jimmi said he wasn't actively promoting QR until the new server is up and running; and given that being a finalist could generate a significant amount of interest – one could assume that Jimmi is planning to have the server ready well before the December 3rd deadline. Or am I just hoping in vain for a surprise announcement within a few weeks?

aw shucks. Well good luck with the comp. Is it the type at which we can vote, or do we just resort to bribery and sexual favours?

I don't know, pat follows this stuff pretty heavily, but I am almost positive it is all based on their own judges. There are a lot of entries, 173 to be exact, but we are really only expecting to compete against the web based category. Those games that play in a browser. After all, there are like teams of 10 submitting full out RPG and FPS. QR would get summoned away or snipered off the chart if we were all in the same category!

Yeah, there's a panel of judges made up of game developers, game journalists, and other game people. As far as I know it, each judge has maybe 10 games assigned to them now and is playing through them, voting, and nominating them to be a finalist. So rather than voting, maybe we should all act extra nice to any guests we come across and make sure they have a good time.

There is also an Audience Award ($2,500) that I think is based on people's votes. That'd be sometime after December 3rd so we can vote on the finalists. I'll be sure and let people know about that when the time comes so we can all throw our weight behind Jimmi.

This better not be a giant ploy to make us be nice to GUESTS and nbobobos. Hopefully they log in as "JUDGE1, JUDGE2...etc"

Actually, Jimmi. If you haven't already, you should e-mail the IGF and set up some member accounts for judges so they can experience the full game.

I thought about that. There are some XBOX accounts I made floating around for the xbox group that "supposedly" was going to check out QR, but then couldn't access it at work (firewall rules), so they said they would try from home, and never did.

If i gave member accounts to them from the start, I think they would be inundated with all the powers, and would be learning the game out of order. It would be the wrong way to experience it, and overload too.

They can always write me for a freebies, after they play. Same with Newgrounds, or any other respected group. Ya' here that Newgrounds?

When you win the $20,000 - can you implement the "$1 Dollar" power suggestion?

Quadradius, entry 114 of 173.

Here's the description:

From The 10th Annual IGF
Quadradius is a two player, head to head, Flash based internet game. It communicates over a network, and allows both strangers and friends to easily challenge one another to a battle of skills, strategies, luck, and bluffing, in an industrial setting arena. The acquisition of varying Power Orbs that your squadron can receive drastically adds to the innovative ways you can defend against or attack your opponent. Nearly 90 power modifications and improvements to obtain that help you foil your opponent’s plans. The ominous Quadradius Arena can be altered to trap, block, and hinder movements, along with granting you access to otherwise unreachable locations. Log in and Battle on!

Yes, I don't know what that funky thing in "opponent's" is, but, pretty solid description. One of the longer ones. Let's wish QR well on it's, um, journey. Or judging. Or something.

I wrote up that description myself. Submissions ask for a whole bunch of fields to be filled in for entry, a screen shot to be submitted, and $95.

I assume they don't have proper utf-8 encoding set up on their database. They should be able to display all characters.

That being said, 1,000th post for me :) May this bestow great luck upon Quadradius in the IGF.
