Another setback in the development of the new QRimson

Postby Jimmi » Mon Sep 08, 2008 4:04 pm

I have some bad news to bring to everyone here who is a fan of Quadradius, so let me get right to the point. Our latest server and backend developer, Xenocid, (Alex), has left the group. I think. Maybe. Probably yes. You see, it is hard to say. Everything seemed to be going good. But in the last few months, progress began to slow down, and then he simply ceased all communication with the group. At first I thought something bad happened, since he was not returning any of our emails, text messages, IM’s etc. I got worried. But then I noticed he still was playing the game almost daily. So did he really leave the project? What is his reason? I know as much as you guys do on this one. It has been almost 4 weeks since I last heard anything.

Where does this leave us now? I do not know. Spirit is down. Production is obviously currently down. But the desire to push forward is still high for me. I have been trying to decide how to do this. See what options I have. See what options we have… If there is a we.

Is Brad still in? I do not know.

Is Pat still in? I do not know.

All I know for sure is I am still in. Especially with stories and interest like this… http://www.quadradius.com/quadboard/viewtopic.php?t=2120

I see we're doing all the news at once, good and bad.

Well, it's always good to know what's going on, at least...um...but sorry for the inclement news....

But I'd bet those of us on the Quadboard would be willing to help if possible. Although, I know not of which I could help with. Hmm.

Still, thanks for the update. Hopefully (and I know this is a tad of a stretch, but hey) they are still devoted to the project.

(Sorry if I'm being naive here. Mentally, I'm a tad slow. >.> )
Changed for the sake of mobile browsers everywhere.

I'll bet Xenocid has been procrastinating so bad he's been avoiding you in fear of reporting zero progress (I've been there). All you need is to call in an expert.

My advice is to send him a leather and whip clad dominatrix hottie that will delightfully pummel him into submission. Make sure she's the happy ending kind. You'll get your point across, get the work you need and he'll thank you for it.

I've already recommended to Jimmi that we ditch the server entirely and just have everyone dictate their moves over the phone to a neutral third party hotline.

Regardless, I'm thinking if things with Alex really don't work out the truth is both Jimmi and I live in a city supposedly FULL of compu-nerds who LUV servers and stuff (and maybe we'd be able to find someone local who'd like to help. Are YOU that person?).

And I'd like to point out that despite things moving slower than expected Jimmi, Pat, and I got a lot of really complex UI stuff solved for the new version and specifically the new lobby which will have a lot more heavy lifting to do in the future with all the new options that will be available (if only I'd get the user list designed like I should've done a few weeks ago).

I'm a bit disappointed in Alex.
Well, not surprised tho.
Russian people usually fall in 2 categories: smart and lazy, and stupid and drunk.
Alex got the lazy part for sure.

Well, in his defense, there could have been more valid reasons as to why, i just find it odd that he never told us.

On a more serious note, I am really sorry to hear about the current state of Qrimson but I cannot say that I was surprised by the news.

I never had a single conversation with Xenocid but after leaving the dev team myself I was able to indirectly observe a few trends that many "uninitiated" here could have overlooked. Quite frankly, I think that most of the issues that existed during my time on the dev team are still unresolved today. So while I can't be certain about the exact reasons why Xenocid left, I wouldn't be surprised if they were similar to my own.

If Jimmi and Brad decide to continue down the path of developing the real version of QR on their own they need to fix many problems that have nothing to do with programming, developers, or even the game itself.*

Will they be able to do it? Who knows. They have many options on the table now. Either way, I think it's time for everyone here to drop the notion of "Qrimson being just around the corner". I know most of us here in the QR community had high hopes for the new game but it's time to recognize that Qrimson will not happen in the near future and it's time to move on.

...

I am sorry to say, but I told you so.

* To avoid complete bashing I purposely avoided naming specific issues with the project. I hope that Jimmi and Brad already know about them and recognize their importance. Such things do not look well in a public forum so I will save the details for private conversations.

Already working a few different paths of "opportunities", I will keep you guys all posted when i can announce some of them. You didn't think we would be down and out for long, did you? With fingers crossed and hard work, we will once again be back on track. Thanks for the support Handi, and being such a great player. Rydash, glad you appreciate getting the honest updates. I hope to give you more positive ones in the future.

I would be short changing my conscious to not add that Shmoo could add some serious octane to the group, if for only to attract some heavyweights in the industry to move this big stuck orb further

CAN SOMEONE FILL ME IN ..... WHAT IS QRIMSON ????

I see lots of chatter about QRimson here and there on the board and from what I can make out of bits and pieces of conversation, it seems to be Quadradius Mark II .... is that correct ???

How's it going to work ?
Whats going to be different ?
What will happen to Quadradius ?
When will it be here ???
"Daddy .... what does formatting C:\ mean ?"

sure.

In short, QRimson is a code name for the new version of Quadradius we have been wanting to do for a while. It is being worked on once again, and we hope to bring it to conclusion this time around. I am redoing it so it is easier to play, eaier to maintain, uses newer technology, more stable, blah blah. But what it mainly means to our players are:

High Priority
- Saved game states. So no more interruptions from dropped connections or closed browser windows. Get right back in on the action where you left off from.
- Arena Editor for unique game plays, along with the ability to share your Arenas
- up to 6 player mode, every man for himself, teams battles, etc.
- Custom power pools to choose from, to further customize your game play
- ELO ranking so you are rewarded for destroying better opponents

Lower priority
- Spectator mode, so others can watch the tourneys
- Clan and team concepts, so you can choose allegiances
- In game goals to accomplish, along with keeping track of your progress and skills
- Playback feature of previous games, to show off some cool combos or end games

There are posts all over this board on it, but this is an updated excerpt from one of those threads.

Oh, and obviously some new powers too. Lets just not call it NPT (New Power Tuesday).

When will it be here? Hard to say, I hope to start showing off alpha versions of it in a few weeks, betas in a few months, playable in spring? I don't call it Quadradius 2. I might later, but the techincal reason i dont is because a lot of games have sequels to re-charge their members. I envision old QR going away, and being replaced by this version, all accounts transfer. If I call it QR II later, that will just be marketing.

The newest talk on the matter is here.
